In 1970, General Motors finally removed its corporate ban of engines larger than 400 cubic inches to be installed in a vehicle. Buick responded quickly by installing a brand new 455 cubic inch engine into its restyled GS series, and thus the creation of Buick GS 455. The new model substituted the 400 modals. Like its predecessor, a Stage 1 and Stage 2 versions, together with HID Kit and xenon lights, were introduced. Extremely positive comments were received by many magazine road test editors on the Stage 1 model’s unbelievable torque this engine produced and its ability to easily spin and control the tires. The model created a roar in the car industry as it was vigorously being compared to the Chrysler Hemi cars. Several contests were also held to determine which the better of the two is but it remains an unsettled matter. This created a humongous boost to the sales of car magazines of that period. The Stage 2 option was rarer as it allows consumers for customization. A total of 12 cars were sold, of which only two were well-known – the Kenne-Bell/Reynolds Buick and the Jones/Benisek car. The production for Buick GS 455 was decreasing after 1970 largely due to stricter emission standards through the usage of catalytic converters and single exhaust pipes which in turn lower the performance of the car. However, Stage 2 parts were still available although the Stage 2 assembly line ceased production after about 75 sets were built.
